Review: Arizona Daily Star
by Cathalena E. Burch

A throbbing, pulsating roar began at the karaoke and merchandise booths in the courtyard of the Westgate City Center.
By the time you entered Jobing.com Arena, you were assaulted with an all-out, ear-splitting wall of scream.

This is what it must have been like when the Beatles arrived in America, or when Elvis did his trademark hip-swivel for the first time on national TV: all-out, uninhibited pandemonium.

Welcome to the new generation of pop music stars, manufactured and nurtured by Disney for an audience of tykes and tweens and approved by parents. Stars like Hannah Montana and the Jonas Brothers, who performed a 2 1/2-hour shriek-fest sold-out concert Friday. They are this generation of 5-to-12-year-olds' Elvis, Rolling Stones and Beatles.

Will Montana, aka Miley Cyrus, be remembered 20 years from now? Perhaps.
Or, in the words of Cyrus' Disney alter ego, Hannah Montana: "Who said, who said I can't be Superman / I say, I say I know I can."
The young audience and their parents screamed with such enthusiasm and volume when the Jonas Brothers took the stage that you feared your eardrums would shrivel in retreat. The three Jo-Bros set the energy level at high; the crowd filling nearly every seat in the arena bolted to their feet and that's where they stayed. Parents and kids sang along to the trio's remake/tweak of "Kids of America" — they're "Kids of the Future" — and went absolutely, bouncing-off-the-walls nuts when big-Bro Joe sauntered to the edge of the center runway and assumed a Mick Jagger swagger in bright-red polyester pants.

The intensity and volume amplified when the first of the headliners took the stage.
You see, the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus show was two concerts. The first 45 minutes was dedicated to the upbeat, inspiring sugary pop songs the blond-haired, preppy-dressed Disney TV character sings on her show. She is consumed with hanging out with friends and hiding her double life with bubbly lyrics in "Life's What You Make It," "Nobody's Perfect," "Old Blue Jeans," "Who Said," "I Got Nerve" and "Make Some Noise." (One of Hannah's highlights was joining with the Jonas Brothers on the slamming dance song "We Got the Party.")

The second 30 minutes was Miley Cyrus, the 14-year-old daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus. She's slightly anti-Hannah — tousled brown-haired, tight black jeans and chains, heavier makeup and a tank-top covered by a leather vest. She and her BFF are ditching the boys and going on "G.N.O. (Girls Night Out)." There's none of the Avril La- vigne-style teen angst, but there's hints of loosening the Disney ropes of innocence that bind her.

Miley sings about getting the guy with a whisper of attitude that is edgier and more defiant than Hannah. Her music squeezes the sugar out and reaches for a rock personality: driving guitar riffs, raucous drum rants and a thumping bass line.
In the end, Hannah and Miley came together — courtesy of a video screen — to perform a duet of Hannah's theme song, "Best of Both Worlds." Perhaps this is the perfection the lyrics portend, where Hannah and Miley can meet in the middle and envelop themselves in the wall of screams from adoring tweens.

Miley Cyrus keeps kids, parents happy

"Miley makes me smiley." A handmade sign held high by a fan during Wednesday's appearance by Hannah Montana, a.k.a. Miley Cyrus, at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles summed up all the screams and squeals during the night for the teen TV and pop star.

The sold-out audience of young teen, tween and toddler girls, along with some boys, was all smiles, dancing and singing along. Parents smiled too, watching their happy kids. And even some ushers were smiling. When's the last time you saw that?

Cyrus' hit Disney Channel show "Hannah Montana," which co-stars her father, one-time country pinup Billy Ray Cyrus, is about a teen pop star coming to terms with her onstage and offstage personas, and this show did the same.

For the first half of the 80-minute concert, she was Hannah, wearing her blond wig and various outfits that included spangled tops over leggings. Just 14, she's already a playful pro, singing mostly uptempo tunes including "Life's What You Make It," the spunky "Old Blue Jeans" and the rah-rah "Pumpin' Up the Party."

Anchored by chunky guitar or keyboard waves, the candy-coated pop-rock was hook-filled and probably reminded some moms and dads of the early '80s new wave sound and groups like the Go-Go's.

The lighting, video screen images and costumes for the dancers matched the music -- colorful with lots of green, red and pink, lots of pink -- while the choreography was unpretentious and loose, never getting in the way of the songs.

Midway, for "We Got the Party," Cyrus was joined by her opening act, Disney's Jonas Brothers, who drew their own starry-eyed high-pitched screams. The trio played a couple of its generic Radio Disney hits while she transformed backstage into her "real" self, Miley.

Wearing a fashion-mall-punky outfit, her wavy brunette hair a touch wild, she beamed for bubblegum garage-rock of "Start All Over" and was silly sneer for "See You Again." She mugged, stuck out her tongue and grinned throughout more costume changes and cutesy production numbers such as the salsa-dipped "Let's Dance" and school spirit of "East Northumberland High."

Sure, cynics might see the whole thing as calculated Disney marketing, but the music was much more lively than the dance dolly and boy band mania of the late '90s. Plus, it's wholesome, positive without pandering and free of expletives and sexual innuendo.

So maybe the fluffy songs won't be more than nostalgic memories in 10-15 years, except, perhaps, the anthem kiss-off to mean boys "G.N.O. (Girls Night Out)." She finished the main set with her TV show's theme song "The Best of Both Worlds," a duet with her blond Hannah persona up on the video screens.

Although some parents already were heading out with the kids during the encore, Cyrus followed through, sitting on a stool at the end of the ramp on the arena floor, strumming guitar, gently backed by her band for the lower-key, sentimental "I Miss You," dedicated to her late grandfather.

Going from Hannah to Miley in the show is a smart move, setting up that future career as a recording artist once the TV program is gone. And this teen talent definitely has that future ahead of her. With lots more smileys to come.

Hannah Montana Rocked the Valley

14 year old Miley Cyrus stars as Hannah Montana on the Disney Channel and she brought her act to Fresno.
Some parents used tactics to get last minute tickets. The media was not allowed inside to shoot the concert, but there was quite a show outside.

"I love how she sings and everything. She's just so awesome. I love her," said Taylor Chrisman, Hannah Montana fan.

"I think she relates to a lot of people, and everyone can relate to her I think."

"She's an inspiration to everybody."

At Monday's Hannah Montana concert, some sang and others screamed. It wasn't just female fans of the Disney Channel star.

"She's beautiful. She's gorgeous."

"She's young and she has a lot of talent. You don't see that from young girls like her. She's really talented," said Anthony Avalos, 15 year old.

Hannah's biggest "fannahs" carried signs, waited in line to take a picture with a cardboard cutout and bought $60 sweatshirts with her picture on them.

For many it was an extravagant night.

Tweens with blonde wigs packed the Fashion Fair mall, where parents paid $40 for Hannah Montana makeovers.

Decked out kids also poured out of limos and vans at the Save Mart Center.

We found people from Las Vegas and Los Angeles who said paying a couple hundred dollars in Fresno was better than paying a thousand or more in L.A.

"We drove 100, no, 238 miles to get here from L.A," said Sabrina Socuet, 10 year old.

"Tickets were around $400 and then gas to get here. We were going to fly, but flights were $500 to get here and back, so we drove. It was 3 1/2 hours here, 3 1/2 hours to get back. I think anyone would do it for their 10 year old," said Neil Socquet.

Hanford dad Stuart Walker and his 9 year old daughter came without tickets.

"This is my plan. I've found tickets for every concert there is in Fresno, so it doesn't worry me at all," said Stuart Walker.

Sure enough, he got tickets and didn't have to spend the $200 he was planning on to see a singer and actress who is leaving her mark on this tween generation.

"It was amazing there were lights. It was the most amazing show I've ever been to," said Amy Jorgenson, 15 year old.

Tickets were more expensive than those for Bruce Springsteen and Justin Timberlake.

She's performing in L.A. Wednesday and San Diego on Thursday. The tour wraps up in January.

Miley Cyrus makes her fans all smiley in Anaheim
The star of the hit Disney Channel show 'Hannah Montana' elicits screams from young fans.

When the fictional character you love more than anything else steps out of your TV to appear in flesh and blood and rhinestones before your very eyes – well, who wouldn't scream?

And so when the moment came – when Hannah Montana of Disney Channel fame descended from the rafters of Honda Center in a backlit cage on Saturday – you can pretty much imagine the ear-piercing shrieks of an "OMG-I-can't-believe-it's-her!" nature that erupted from the crowd.

This was the Big One for tween entertainment this fall, a concert tour that sold out within a minute or two of tickets going on sale in each city. A ticket so coveted that desperate parents threw themselves on the expensive mercy of ticket brokers. And any kid lucky enough to score a ticket could barely stand the wait.

Stepping out the cage, real-life star Miley Cyrus – who performed as her TV character for the first half of the show – sashayed down the runway singing "Rock Star," twinkling in a black-and-silver-spangled top over knee-high leggings and black boots.

"Life's What You Make It" followed that, with eight backup dancers bounding around the stage, then "Just Like You," and by then – three songs in – it was time for the first of a half-dozen costume changes.

Appearing back on stage in blue jeans – sparkly, sparkly blue jeans – to sing the song "Old Blue Jeans," Miley kept the crowd enthralled, and with good reason: these songs are practically part of their musical DNA by now, listened to over and over again on the Disney Channel sitcom, on Radio Disney, and the CDs that have sold by the millions.

And here's the thing – easy as it is for non-believers to mock Hannah and Miley, if you set aside your prejudices, it's easy to like this stuff.

The songs are catchy, with strong hooks and melodies – far better than the Partridge Family pop yours truly grew up on. And unlike some other tween acts, Miley had a real five-piece rock band backing her up and seemed to be doing more real singing than Britney Spears or Ashley Simpson or any number of other divas do.

"Nobody's Perfect" had my 6-year-old deputy reviewer Anna Lily jumping up and down on her seat, where she stayed through "We Got the Party," on which Miley was joined by her opening act, the Jonas Brothers.

After that, the second half of the show opened with Miley as Miley – gone was the platinum wig her character wears in her rock-star guise on TV, present was the real 14-year-old singing songs she recorded under her own name, including hits "Start All Over," "East Northumberland High," and "G.N.O. (Girl's Night Out)," her latest Radio Disney hit.

In just under 90 minutes she was done, and the crowd filed out, exhausted but happy.

"I never thought it was going to be like that," said Kimmie Daniels, 12, of Corona, who came with friend Taylor Young, 12, and the "Miley Rox Our Sox" sign that they'd made. Left at home was their scrapbook on why they love Miley.

"She's beautiful," Kimmie said.

"She's a great singer," Taylor added.

And on and on, making it clear how much the show had meant to them – and all the other kids – who'd been there.

Hannah Montana (or is it Miley Cyrus?) lives up to hype

One piece of advice was constantly repeated to parents and other adults attending the Hannah Montana concert on Thursday night in Oakland: Wear earplugs.

That wasn't a sly dig at Montana's Radio Disney-approved music - or that of her alter-ego, and real person, Miley Cyrus. It was merely words of caution, since there was to be screaming on this night - lots of it.

The high-pitched squeals of pure joy, coming from the thousands of pre-teen girls who packed the Oracle Arena, came in constant waves. The girls began screaming well before their idol even took the stage, as the big overhead screens showed a steady succession of pictures of the 14-year-old singer. Yet, those were nothing in comparison to the shriek heard once the house lights dimmed and all the months of waiting was finally over.

At that point, it was Montana-mania.

There's been a lot of that going around lately. The Hannah Montana tour - featuring Cyrus both performing as herself and appearing as the lead character of the popular Disney Channel show - has turned out to be the hottest ticket of the year. Supply has been dwarfed by demand on this tour, which includes a date on Sunday at HP Pavilion in San Jose, and there's been reports of people paying thousands of dollars for tickets.

Much like Disney's "High School Musical" was in 2006, Hannah Montana has become this year's true pre-teen music phenomenon - the TV show is a mega-hit, the soundtracks top the album charts and the tour is selling-out across the country. For someone, say, over the age of 15, it might be hard to understand all the fuss. The show's premise is fairly simple - a young teen balances a double-life as a high school student and a rock star - yet it's certainly captured the attention of young, mostly female audiences.

"She's a young girl who all the other young girls want to be like," said Hayward resident Melissa Martinez, who brought her 8-year-old daughter, Ericka, to the show. "Every day, my little girl comes home and she's got to watch 'Hannah Montana.' "

Opening with "Rock Star," a track from this year's "Hannah Montana 2: Meet Miley Cyrus," the young singer delivered a razzle-dazzle 75-minute performance that was full of costume changes, big dance numbers and plenty of personality. The multimedia star - the daughter of country singer Billy Ray "Achy Breaky Heart" Cyrus - divided the set into two parts. In the first half, she played her TV character, Hannah Montana, and then spent the second half introducing the crowd to Miley Cyrus. She played the characters like completely separate entities, going so far as to greet the crowd anew once she took off the blonde wig and "transformed" into Miley.

For every new movement in pop music, it seems, there are two leaders - from the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to Nirvana and Pearl Jam to 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. By establishing two distinct characters, Cyrus has been able to fill both chairs and hasn't left much room for outside competition. She's also made herself less dependent on Disney and provided an avenue to grow professionally and attract older crowds.

Watching the kids react to the show, it was easy to draw comparisons to other pop-music phenomenoms from the past - like 'N Sync, Britney and, even, the Beatles. For some in attendance, however, there's simply no comparison. One of those folks was Castro Valley's Sarah Luzuriaga, who brought her 9-year-old nieces, Kaylei Mae Long and Cori Ann Long, to the concert.

"This," she said, "is bigger than the Beatles for the girls."

Live Review: Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus in Portland, OR

The "Best of Both Worlds" tour--featuring Miley Cyrus, her television alter-ego Hannah Montana, and Disney Channel regulars The Jonas Brothers could easily be categorized as a marketing scheme designed to manipulate fans and their parents for the sake of the almighty buck.
Before the concert at Portland's Rose Garden arena, videos played exclusively from Disney shows. The advertisements scrolling around the venue promoted upcoming events such as Playhouse Disney Live and Disney On Ice: Princess Wishes. There was even an ad for Disney theme parks just before the music started.

So, for the cynical, there was plenty to berate. But, for the thousands of fans at the sold-out show who are too young to care about things like musical integrity, this concert was nearly perfect.

As the opening act, The Jonas Brothers, were lowered onto the stage, the crowd went wild, screaming as if it were the second coming of The Beatles. Looking like a cross between a boy band and an early '80s new-wave act, the boys broke in to their anthem, "Kids Of The Future."

If you didn't know better, you'd think Joe, Nick and Kevin Jonas were seasoned headliners. Those boys are either very good, or they were great students in their "Arena Rock 101" class. Let's not misunderstand: their sound is definitely pop, but lead singer Joe, 19, has a stage presence reminiscent of Steven Tyler and Mick Jagger--and maybe a tad of Green Day thrown in for flavor. He strutted the ramp like an accomplished entertainer and his mic-stand antics made it obvious he knew how to work a stage. On the technical side, the sound was a bit harsh and the vocal mix didn't seem to gel, but no one seemed to mind, or notice for that matter.

As anticipation began building for Hannah Montana, glow sticks began waving throughout the arena. In total rock-star fashion, 14-year-old Cyrus, as Hannah, was lowered to the stage performing the appropriately titled song "Rockstar."

The TV star turned pop-idol obviously knew how to command the stage as she performed a handful of Hannah Montana songs. She really got the crowd going when she began "Pumpin' Up the Party," one of her nearly dozen songs that hit Billboard's Hot 100 chart in 2006. Then, she brought the The Jonas Brothers back on stage to help bridge the Hannah/Miley transformation.

The tour was obviously designed to focus on Cyrus rather than the character she plays on TV. The words, "Meet Miley" scrolled across the backdrops as the pyrotechnics began to burst. As the young performer rose up from the stage, the promise of a new star began to shine. Cyrus began her set with "Start All Over."

Cyrus's songs are less poppy than those she sings as Hannah. And some of the images on the backdrops during her set conveyed a more rockin' feel.

One highlight toward the end of the show came when Cyrus left the stage while her background singers began singing, "Oh, Miley, you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind." It was almost an inside joke for the parents who remember Toni Basil in a cheer outfit singing, "Oh Mickey, you're so fine ..." Oblivious to the reference, the younger set, however, loved it when Cyrus returned to the stage in a costume that evoked schoolgirl days, with glittering argyle patterns on her clothes, bicycle riders and skate boarders crisscrossing the stage while dancers donned letterman's jackets and cheer outfits. Even the very young children, who were obviously getting tired, sprang back to life as Cyrus sang a fan favorite, "G.N.O.--Girls Night Out."

Cyrus then told the crowd she was bringing out a friend, and, with a bit of movie magic, Miley and Hannah sang a duet version of "Best of Both Worlds."

Cyrus closed the number with confetti and streamers shooting into the audience, driving the kids who had never seen such a thing wild. For her encore, she changed into a simple outfit, brought her guitar to the front of the ramp and performed a song she wrote for her late-grandfather, "I Miss You." It was nice to see that Cyrus could actually play the guitar while singing the tender song.

With a bit of vocal conditioning to match her excellent stage presence, Cyrus has the potential to grow into a substantial artist. However, if you weren't wowed by the celebrity of it all, you might have thought that Cyrus should have opened the show, with Hannah supporting The Jonas Brothers as headliners. Maybe it's simply the boy/girl thing that made the audience scream for the Brothers. It's tough to say with certainty that they stole the show, but it is very near the truth.

Miley/Hannah delivers a nearly flawless Utah show

Her television character, Hannah Montana, sings that nobody's perfect.
But Miley Cyrus was nearly flawless Friday during her sold-out Best of Both Worlds Tour concert at the EnergySolutions Arena.

As if the Disney Channel star weren't popular enough in Utah, having sold out a second concert today at 4 p.m.
Just like in her television show, Cyrus split her concert between her real self and her alter ego. But, "sweet niblets," she didn't get on stage until 9 p.m.
The extra preparation was due to the fact the concert was being filmed for a 3-D Disney movie. Two large booms holding cameras moved about during the show, but the 'tween fans were happy for the chance to be in a movie - many of whom had the chance to line up in front of the stage, screaming and waving.

For her first set, Cyrus sang eight Hannah Montana favorites, including "Life's What You Make It," "Old Blue Jeans" and "Pump Up the Party."
And she had almost as many costume changes - from black leggings and a metallic silver sweater to a pink glitter dress with white go-go boots.
There was a 10-minute intermission, when the opening act, the three Jonas Brothers, returned to the stage and sang their popular hit "The Year 3000."

At 9:40 the brown-haired teen returned to the stage. She sang another eight songs off her
recently released double album, "Hannah Montana 2/Meet Miley Cyrus," including the salsa-themed "Let's Dance" and "Right Here."

She ended the concert with "Best of Both Worlds," the theme song from her show.
Cyrus made a barefoot return to the stage, however, and, playing her own guitar, sang the song she wrote for her grandfather, "My Guardian Angel, My Pappy

Hannah Montana show in tune with good fun

As with any kid sensation, the reaction to Hannah Montana covers the spectrum from worship to cat-call.

The kids see her as their very own Elvis Presley. Parents appreciate her wholesome image, self-empowering lyrics and the fact that she wears Spandex underneath those short mini- dresses. And certain critics and naysayers see Montana as the representation of evil Disney and its penchant for the kind of corporate synergy that can only be spelled m-o-n-e-y.

But while most of the music is oversimplified bubblegum pop, the core of this TV show turned pop music spectacle is clean and fun.

At the very least, Hannah Montana is ensuring that power pop will never become an extinct art form.

The screaming kids who took over the sold-out Pepsi Center on Thursday night (with parents in tow) are the future fans of the Beach Boys, Fountains of Wayne and Ted Leo & the Pharmacists. This is, ultimately, a good thing.
And the fact that this review contains a complete set-list of Thursday's show at its end will ensure that more kids under the age of 18 will read this one short piece of criticism than all of this paper's Rockies coverage from the last season combined.

The catch-up for those living under a rock: On the Disney Channel, Hannah Montana is the alter-ego of everyday student Miley Stewart, played by Miley Cyrus, daughter of country has-been Billy Ray Cyrus, who happens to play her dad on TV as well. Cyrus' pop shows start out with her as Montana, wig and all, but they later morph into her own persona, which is still a character of some sort.

As parents not-so-subtly checked Rockies scores on their cells Thursday night, the kids yanked the phones from their hands to take pictures of their beloved hero.

Critically there's not much to the music. "Life's What You Make It" is a blast of a dance track, and "See You Again" is a fun homage to the Runaways with Cyrus playing the slightly homoerotic bad girl with the perfect pseudo-snarl.

And while the rest of the songs are largely forgettable — Cyrus' material especially sounds like Montana's rejected B-sides — there's something about 14-year-old Cyrus that brings the life out of a kid, and certain adults. She's a gifted performer, even if her effervescent, lippy smile practically shouts Disney.
"This one means so much to me, my family, my closest friend and now, hopefully, you guys," Cyrus said before laying into "I Miss You," a ballad she co-wrote in honor of her grandfather. The song featured Cyrus on acoustic guitar, and it was the only track of her encore — a bold and brave move, even for a girl who can do no wrong.

The set-list from Thursday's show eerily resembled some otherworldly Andre W.K. set-list from the future: "Rock Star," "Life's What You Make It," "Just Like You," "Old Blue Jeans," "Nobody's Perfect," "Pumpin' Up the Party," "I Got Nerve," "We Got the Party," short Jonas Brother interlude while Hannah became Miley, "Star All Over," "Good and Broken," "See You Again," "Let's Dance, "Right Here," "East Northumberland High," "Best of Both Worlds" and "I Miss You."

Review: Omaha World Herald
by Henry J Cordes

Review: Hannah/Miley lives up to young fans' dreams

With music pulsing, a brightly-lit cube with a single familiar silhouette inside descended to the Qwest Center Omaha stage. Out popped 14-year-old Miley Cyrus, aka Hannah Montana, who began to belt out the words to her hit song, "Rock Star."

Miley Cyrus performs at the Qwest Center Tuesday night. So piercing was the simultaneous shriek from thousands of preteen girls, you'd think the Beatles had just made landfall. To the 6- to 12-year-old girls who make up the vast majority of her fan base, Hannah/Miley is as big as the Beatles, and perhaps Elvis, rolled into one.

The teenage pop sensation proceeded to sing and dance through an energetic, colorful and entertaining 90-minute show that left her young audience mesmerized, loving every minute.

That no doubt pleased the parents who tagged along, some of whom paid scalper's prices for these tickets.

As for parents of tweens who weren't able to score tickets, well, Miley's performance did nothing to disprove your kids' contention that you are "the worst parents in the world."

Yes, after weeks of buildup and some controversy over tickets, Hannah mania gave way to Hannah hysteria in Omaha Tuesday night during a sold-out show before more than 14,000.

To those who somehow missed the buildup, Miley Cyrus is the star of the Disney Channel's "Hannah Montana," a show about a regular schoolgirl who moonlights as a blond-wigged rock star.

But in a case of life imitating art, the acting role has transformed Miley into a true rock star. Her latest album shot to the top of the charts immediately upon release this summer. The phenom does have some music in her blood, as the daughter of Billy Ray Cyrus of "Achy Breaky Heart" fame.

Tickets to Miley's first-ever national concert tour sold out in minutes, and ticket brokers have been selling them for hundreds, even thousands, of dollars. Girls left out cried. Their parents seethed.

Miley even alluded to it during her show Tuesday, thanking the moms and dads for all their troubles. "I know it wasn't easy getting here," she said, no doubt more a reference to their financial sacrifices than the pre-show traffic.

So tight was ticket demand that the ticket usually afforded The World-Herald's music reviewer could not be spared. That helped turn this reporter/dad who had merely been playing the role of chaperone/chauffeur for his Hannah-loving 8-year-old twins (paying face value for tickets, by the way) into a music critic for a night.

Not much of a critic, though. Because as much as you want to be cynical of Disney and its ability to turn a TV show into millions of dollars in CD, DVD, concert ticket and merchandise sales, you have to look at it from the tween's perspective. And from that standpoint, Miley lived up to the hype.

Even though Omaha was only the third stop of Miley's tour - in her words, she's "just learning" - she didn't show the jitters you'd expect from someone too young to drive who suddenly has to get up in front of thousands of people. And this was no lip-synch act, as evidenced by the breathlessness with which she finished many of her biggest numbers. She was a true performer.

More than anything, it was wholesome fun, and she seemed to be enjoying it, too. She seemed sincere near the end in thanking her young audience for "making my dreams come true."

The heartthrob Jonas Brothers, another Disney act that opened for Miley/Hannah and performed one duet with her, were well-received, too.

Ann Karls of Blair, Neb., paid more than twice the face value for tickets but said it was worth it to take her 10-year-old daughter, Taylor, to the show. "She's a great role model. I thought it was a great concert," Karls said.

Marc and Stacie Brodkey of Omaha managed to purchase tickets for face value the day of the show online through Ticketmaster. They said the best part of the concert was seeing their children, 8-year-old Benjamin and 5-year-old Julia, enjoy themselves.

"I liked the part when Hannah sang with the Jonas Brothers," Benjamin Brodkey said.

Changing costumes often, Miley sang the first half of her show in character as Hannah before taking off the wig and finishing the show as Miley.

The Miley part of the show had a particular energy, but it was a little sentimental, too, because it was an indication that she is getting ready to shed the Hannah persona and move on to other things. TV shows don't last forever, just like little girls don't stay little girls forever.

For me and surely many other parents, just seeing their kids' excited faces illuminated in the glow from the stage made it all worth it.

So for you "lame" non-ticket-buying parents, I can't offer much consolation. This show was everything your kids dreamed of.

You can probably still get out of the doghouse. But you may have to play the new-puppy card to do it.

Nobody's Perfect as performed in St. Louis 2007

Review: TwinCities.com
by Ross Raihala

At face value, Miley/Hannah lives up to hype

A sold-out crowd of about 16,160 crammed into the Target Center on Sunday night to spend 90-odd minutes screaming in the general direction of 14-year-old Miley Cyrus, who performed both as herself and as the title character of her TV show, "Hannah Montana." In terms of feverish demand and limited supply, there hasn't been a local concert ticket this hot in years, if not decades.

Much to the chagrin of parents and their pocketbooks, the tour has divided tween fans into two camps: the haves (those with tickets) and the have-nots (those without). Blame Disney, which bungled its handling of the tour from top to bottom, as well as the newly legal local resale market, which scooped up huge numbers of seats and turned them over for 10 times their face value (or more). All for a performer whose primary audience isn't old enough to drive.

All of which leads to the obvious question: Was it worth it? Well, I won't blame those who paid $1,250 a seat on the resale market - enough cash to buy four "Hannah Montana" LCD TVs at Target - if they feel the sting of buyer's remorse. But those lucky folks who scored tickets at face value saw a flashy, eye-popping spectacle with better-than-expected production values and plenty to tell the have-nots back at school.

As I'm more than two decades past the target demographic age for "Hannah Montana," I invited Edina fifth-grader Taylor Lieber along to help review the show. Taylor, who turns 11 in December, gave the show a 9 out of 10,

rating it higher than the two other concerts she's seen, Hilary Duff and the Cheetah Girls.
Sound problems kept Taylor from awarding the otherwise "totally awesome" show a 10. When Disney heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers opened the evening, Taylor was visibly startled by the thunderous volume - both from the stage and the healthy lungs of her peers. We picked up some earplugs in time for the main attraction, which helped Taylor quite a bit, but she still had trouble understanding all of the words from Miley.

Miley split her performance in two, but the difference was more than just a blond wig. Said Taylor: "Hannah Montana has pump-up-the-party songs that are more jumpy. You wanted to dance to them. The Miley Cyrus songs were all about feelings." As such, the energy level dropped significantly with Cyrus' own material, which seems aimed more at the teen audience.

But those "Hannah Montana" numbers boomed with energy. Cyrus proved an engaging and charismatic personality, too, and clearly picked up a few pointers from her dad, Billy Ray "Achy Breaky Heart" Cyrus. Said Taylor: "She seemed a little nervous at first, her voice was up and down, but once she got in the mood, it looked like she was having a lot of fun up there."

It also was nice to see Disney pump a little money into the production. The high-tech stage provided plenty of dazzle, with four suspended video boxes and numerous other screens that bounced between prerecorded visuals and audience shots. With a live band and a gaggle of backup dancers and singers, there was enough going on to allow Miley the time for numerous costume changes.

Miley's vocals did sound like they occasionally had some prerecorded help, but for the most part, she appeared to be singing live throughout much of the show. Taylor could tell she wasn't lip-syncing "when you could hear her breathing." But when she was kicking out some of the more complicated moves, "I think the people controlling the sound were helping her a lot." Interestingly, though, Taylor didn't seem to mind: "That's what happens."

All the have-nots aren't totally out of luck. The Jonas Brothers will visit the Mall of America for a free acoustic performance at 4 p.m. today. Plus, a live DVD from the tour is all but inevitable, and it won't cost parents a house payment.

Hannah Montana fans party at i wireless Center

Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana entered the stage of the i wireless Center Saturday night to the screams of the packed house -- screams that didn't stop throughout the 75-minute show.

A lighted screen was lowered to the stage, then was raised to reveal Ms. Cyrus, wearing the blonde wig that makes her Hannah Montana.

"How you all doin' tonight," she asked after her first song, "Rock Star." "Are you ready to party?"

The audience responded, screaming even louder as she began singing "Life's What You Make It."

As her Disney-TV character, the 14-year-old star gave a high-energy performance, interacting with audience members and her on-stage cast. The show included a lot of fireworks, a lot of lights and several costume changes.

The Jonas Brothers, the opening act that got the screams started, came back on stage to perform "We Got the Party With Us" with Ms. Cyrus as Hannah. They performed alone as Ms. Cyrus went backstage to change.

She returned to the stage, rising up from the floor, restarting the concert as Miley to "Start All Over." The song was accompanied by fireworks.

"I could not dream of a better way to start the Best of Both World Tour," she told the audience. "Whatever it took to get here.... thank you."

Her finale was the concert title number, "Best of Both World." Everyone in the crowd sang along. The song ended with a fireworks display, and streamers shot out over the audience.

As an encore, she performed a song she wrote in tribute to her grandfather, "I Miss You." Pictures of her grandfather and Ms. Cyrus flashed on a screen behind her as she played guitar and sang.

Throughout the concert, the audience was enthusiastic. Even before, fans screamed as members of the stage crew appeared from behind the curtain.

The Jonas Brothers, Nick, Kevin and Joe, opened the show, and were really good. They hyped up the crowd, preparing it for Hannah's entrance.

Cheering, screaming and jumping up and down, the fans clearly enjoyed the show. Some waved posters, many wore tour T-shirts and waved glow sticks.

Cortney Claypool, 9, was wearing a blonde Hannah Montana wig. She and her mom drove from Frankfort, Ill., to see the show.

"It was worth the drive," she said.

It was a really good performance. It was loud. It was fun.

Hannah Montana fans are not disappointed

Laura Duggan and Aubrey Jinga couldn't bear to listen to the radio station broadcasting live from outside the Hannah Montana concert at Scottrade Center on Thursday night. As Laura's mother drove them near the concert, Laura, 12, and Aubrey, 9, looked out the windows of the car at the mass of fans and felt no joy.

Their parents had failed them. They hadn't gotten tickets. Instead, Sharon Duggan was dragging them to some Rams cheerleader thing and, adding insult to injury, they had to drive past thousands of fans who would get to see the Disney Channel superstar's concert in St. Louis, the start of her blockbuster tour.

They parked and got out. And Sharon Duggan handed the girls an envelope to open. Inside, Hannah Montana tickets.

The shrieks of joy at the surprise — as the girls jumped up and down and hugged each other, then Sharon Duggan, then each other again — may have been picked up by sensitive scientific instruments on other continents. Advertisement

"Don't lose those tickets," Sharon Duggan reminded her daughter.

"Why. Would. I. Lose. Them?!?" an incredulous Laura responded.

Indeed, the tickets have been the hottest in town for weeks, since the announcement that Hannah's tour would start in St. Louis, triggering a madness somewhat like that stirred by the Beatles 40 years ago, but with a lower average age and higher-pitched screams.

Not all of those yelps came from excited kids. Tickets to see Hannah Montana — aka 14-year-old Miley Cyrus, star of the "Hannah Montana" show on the Disney Channel — disappeared minutes after they went on sale, and just as rapidly appeared on online resale sites at steep markup.

Parental frustration at the scalper frenzy was intense enough to trigger action from the Missouri attorney general. Attempts to get more tickets to actual parents brought requirements that worked for some parents and caused more frustration for others.

"We didn't think we were going to get tickets," said Mary Eggers, who didn't land tickets for herself and her grandniece, Sophia Mulwa, 7, until Wednesday night.
Not that her tickets were the best. Though purchased from the box office, the two seats weren't even together. And the concert still wasn't cheap. Sophia needed a new outfit — a Hannah Montana shirt, Hannah Montana pants, even a Hannah Montana purse.

"This has been expensive, and I paid face value for my ticket," Eggers said.

No matter to Sophia, with her "I (heart) Hannah Montana" sign and her dream to get Hannah Montana's autograph. She was just glad to be there, and her great-aunt was happy to take her.

That seemed to be the mood Thursday night among the sea of fans in pink and purple and glitter and sequins. Parents just looked relieved to have tickets, while their offspring waited impatiently, hopping up and down or dancing in anticipation.

Allison Higgins of Fenton was one of them, after being presented with Hannah tickets on Tuesday, her eighth birthday.

"She went crazy," her mom, Sandra Higgins, said.

"I was about to cry," Allison said.

The ages of concertgoers seemed to range from 4 or 5 to the ill-defined age when enthusiasm for artists like Hannah turns into the eye-rolling disdain of full-fledged teenagerhood. Pink tufts of fake or temporarily dyed hair were popular, as were headsets like the one Hannah wears as she sings.

Girls tried to guess which of the seemingly endless string of limousines carried Hannah, but most of the limos disgorged astounding numbers of other Hannah fans in a clown-car manner.

Inside Scottrade, after an opening set by the Jonas Brothers, fan dreams finally turned to reality as Hannah Montana was lowered from the ceiling onto the stage in an illuminated cube to the tune of her own "Rock Star." The accompanying screams from more than 15,000 fans was appropriately deafening.

Amanda Michaels, 9, echoed the opinion of many first-time concertgoers in the audience, "It was the best concert ever."

StubHub Offers Tips for Parents on Scoring Hannah Montana Tickets and Reveals Market Pricing Trends

Hannah Montana Tickets

StubHub, the world's largest ticket marketplace, has recognized the unparalleled demand for teen idol Hannah Montana's upcoming nationwide tour, and in light of immediate sell-outs, is offering parents useful tips on finding tickets to her shows. Many fans have been recently disappointed when, despite logging online the minute an on-sale begins, no tickets were available for purchase. It's an unfortunate reality of the primary distribution of tickets today, with Internet access inviting more buyers than ever before and limited numbers of tickets being made available to the general public.

Despite quick sell-outs, good news remains, as plenty of seats are being offered on StubHub's ticket marketplace by those who were able to buy, some for as low as $65. The national average selling price for a Hannah Montana ticket on StubHub is an astounding $214. Her tour is currently the hottest selling tour of 2007 based on the dollar volume of tickets transacted through StubHub, outselling the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Van Halen to date.

StubHub's Tips for Parents

-- Remain patient, check StubHub daily for more reasonably priced
tickets and wait for the market to adjust.

-- Sometimes waiting until a week before a show will yield the very
best bargains and maybe a surprise for the little one who thought
the show was sold out.

-- Set a price point that's comfortable and within your budget. As the
show approaches, keep your eyes peeled for price and location. If
it appears, grab it before it's gone. Sellers adjust prices daily
on StubHub.

-- Consider attending shows in surrounding areas or on different
dates. Ex. On StubHub, the average selling ticket price at the
Times Union Center in Albany, NY to date is just $109, but the
average price for the show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY on
12/27 is $406. In some cases, it may be worth the drive for parents to save cash.

-- Other markets currently with more affordable price offers include:
-- Minneapolis, MN -- San Diego, CA
-- Columbus, OH -- Tampa, FL
-- Anaheim, CA -- Sunrise, FL
-- Los Angeles, CA -- Charlotte, NC

-- Only use reputable sites like StubHub which has a FanProtect(TM)
Guarantee, doesn't share your credit card information with sellers
and is recommended by the Better Business Bureau.

-- Hannah Montana Tickets also make great holiday presents for kids, since she has a slew of concert dates in late December and January.

"The market driven prices for Hannah Montana's wildly popular tour are skewing high currently, not unlike a company whose stock price soars after a positive earnings announcement. Although some people are purchasing, sellers will eventually have to adjust their prices to attract buyers," said StubHub spokesperson, Sean Pate. "Thankfully there are hundreds of tickets available for her shows across the country so the access and choice remains for fans."

StubHub manages an online ticket marketplace for the fans, but doesn't purchase or own any tickets for resale itself. Tickets listed on StubHub are being priced by the general public and asking prices vary from the reasonable to occasionally the insane.
Hannah Montana Resale Pricing Trends

StubHub has reviewed the top ten Hannah Montana shows with the highest average selling price and found that nine of these shows will go on sale to the general public this Saturday. Sellers who have early access to tickets will typically list higher prices early on but as more tickets are listed onto the site after a general on sale, supply increases and asking prices decrease.
